The Checkpoint SL series from Trek hits the sweet spot for performance and value. The 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber frame is already very light, but Trek decided to make some upgrades from last year. The SRAM eTap AXS drivetrain is also a breakthrough for riders seeking to adventure off the grid.
Trek listened to their customers about their expectations regarding handling and performance. They redesigned the Checkpoint SL frame and fork to perform better on really crumbly gravel roads, trails and harsh surfaces with a move towards progressive geometry. What's that you ask? Progressive geometry has been used in mountain bikes for years, with the top tube extended out a few centimeters to plant the front wheel further from the rider's center of gravity. This improves stability on technical descents where a more conventional bike would fear to tread. A change in fork rake still provides a nimble feel, especially in tight turns and hairpins. A shorter stem and short-reach handlebar makes the cockpit fit identically compared to a conventional bike in the same size. The Checkpoint SL 6 is still very light, thanks to Trek's carbon fiber, but it now boasts even more mounts for, well, everything! Triple bottle mounts on the fork blades, and integrated mounts for a frame bag are all there. Bottle cage mounts, rack mounts and fender mounts are still to be found. There's even an internal storage compartment in the down tube! An IsoSpeed decoupler at the seat tube/top tube juncture soaks up harsh surfaces, railway crossings and potholes with ease.
The Checkpoint SL 6's drivetrain brings SRAM's wireless AXS shifting to the party. Every shift is literally lightning-quick! Every gear change is perfect. Every. Single. Time. Even under hard pedaling loads. There are no cables and housing to replace or adjust. The removable battery found at the rear derailleur runs for 500-600 miles between recharges. You can keep track of the battery charge level with the SRAM AXS smartphone app, and even change the operation of the shift buttons with it. Cool, huh? The SRAM 12-speed cassette features a 10-44T gearing range and is matched with a SRAM Rival alloy crankset with single 40T chainring. Yes, that's a less than 1-to-1 gear ratio for attacking truly fearsome inclines!
Robust wheels and tires are needed for trouble-free adventure cycling. The Checkpoint SL 6 is equipped with tubeless-ready alloy Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 wheels and GR1 Team Issue tires, making for a durable combination without weighing you down. A tubeless alloy rim with a 25mm internal width allows the 40mm GR1 tires to spread out, improving grip and overall ride quality. Butted stainless steel J-bend spokes bring reliability and serviceability to the Checkpoint SL 6, while a Rapid Drive 54 freehub body adds instant engagement to every pedal stroke. SRAM Rival hydraulic disc brakes bring confident stopping power in all conditions, rain or shine.
The Checkpoint SL 6 adds comfort and ergonomics to the cockpit with Bontrager's P3 Verse Comp saddle, carbon fiber seatpost and accessory-ready alloy Pro Blendr stem. The alloy Elite Gravel handlebars feature a 13 degree flare, 75mm reach, and replaceable IsoZone EVA pads for added cushioning.
A Bontrager BITS Internal frame storage bag and SRAM AXS battery charger are included with the purchase of this bicycle.
